YREA’s ED wins award!

Congratulations to Gloria Marsh: York Region Environmental Alliance’s Executive Director on winning the Moriane Heroes: Community Champion award: !

The Monitoring the Moraine (MTM) Partners, EcoSpark and STORM Coalition, are pleased to announce the 2012 Moraine Heroes.

The winners are:

Community Champion: Gloria Marsh for being a dedicated Moraine steward, advocate and activist in York Region through her work with the Richmond Hill Naturalists, the Kettle Lakes Coalition, the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust and the York Region Environmental Alliance

Landowner Champion: John Oyston for actively stewarding his 49-hectare (101-acre) Bewdley property overlooking Rice Lake by transforming a hayfield into a tall grass prairie encircled by an arboretum with 120 native trees and shrubs

Municipal Leadership: Jane Underhill, concerned citizen turned councillor, for tirelessly and passionately advocating for the Oak Ridges Moraine in King Township and inspiring countless others

Collaborative Approaches: Mark Stabb and Vanessa Slater for educating local youth about the importance of the Moraine‚Äôs watersheds through the Uxbridge Youth Centre event “The Brook Never Sleeps”, and inspiring youth to become stream stewards in Uxbridge

Proactive Approaches: Russ Powell for his years of patience and determination in securing over 890 hectares (2200 acres) of land on the Oak Ridges Moraine in Durham Region
